As a part of Union County, North Carolina, Indian Trail covers approximately 22 square miles of land and is situated 15 miles southeast of Charlotte. It has a population of 40,051 people.
The town of Indian Trail was founded in 1861, with the establishment of a post office named “Indian Trail.” It was named this because of its location on the Indian Trading Path, a historical Native American trade route that ran from Petersburg, Virginia to Augusta, Georgia. The town grew and became a prosperous farming community throughout the late 18th and early 20th centuries. Cotton, tobacco, and dairy farming were the main industries. Indian Trail was incorporated in 1907.
Today Indian Trail is home to numerous parks and recreational areas, and plenty of other unique tourist attractions. One of the most popular parks is Crooked Creek park, which includes playgrounds, athletic fields, and a dog park. You can also hike, bike, or run on the town’s greenway system which consists of several miles of trails, or go on a self-guided history tour on Indian Trail.
