Located in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, Kannapolis has a population of roughly 49,259 people within 32.3 square miles. The city lies about 25 miles northeast of Charlotte, and makes up a part of the Charlotte metropolitan area.
Kannapolis was founded as a planned community in 1906. The community was planned for the J.W. Cannon textile manufacturing company.The name “Kannapolis” was derived by combining the Greek words “kanna” (reeds) and “polis” (city).
The J.W. Cannon company built a mill and several hundred homes for its workers, and the city grew from there, centered around the mill. Kannapolis remind a company town until the 1980s, when the mill closed and the city began to diversify its economy.
Today, Kannapolis, NC, offers multiple attractions for residents and visitors to enjoy. These include the North Carolina Research Campus, a public-private research center focused on nutrition, agriculture, and biotechnology, and the Dale Earnhardt Tribute Plaza, which celebrates the life and legacy of NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, who was born in the town.
